What is circuits training?
Circuit training is a popular form of exercise at the gym. A circuit is designed by an experienced trainer to meet a physical goal (e. g. strength, stamina, flexibility) through a set of assigned exercises, completed in a prescribed order.
Why should students complete a circuit in a group?
Having students complete a circuit in a group is a great way to add support, in addition to those already designed into the circuit. The structure of the circuit allows for students to self-check their results, but they may be confused on where they went wrong or how to remedy the situation.
Can learning progressions be incorporated into a circuit?
In addition, learning progressions can be incorporated into a circuit, see McCallum (2014), so that the assigned problems address significant cognitive hurdles in the understanding of important mathematical content.
How can circuits be used as a pre-assessment?
If a circuit is designed according to a learning progression, then it can be used as a pre-assessment to see where students are lacking understanding. Similarly, it can also be used as a post-assessment to gauge procedural fluency of the unit’s concepts.
While most people ring in the new year with resolutions (loose 10 pounds, clean out the closet, eat healthy), mathematicians like to talk about the features of the numeric value of the new year. 2016 is a fun number, not only because it is divisible by 4 which makes this a leap year*, but because 2016 is a TRIANGULAR NUMBER.
Maybe. But maybe not. There are three main reasons I do not include answer keys with my circuits. The first is, because of the format of the resource, the answers are embedded in the circuit. The students work the first problem, get the answer, and then hunt for the answer. When they find it, it reveals the second question.
